Sleep is for the Week was the first album released after the demise of Frank Turner’s band, Million Dead. It was recorded in the home of Tarrant Anderson whom is now the bass player in Turner’s band, The Sleeping Souls.
To Frank, it’s “an experiment.” In an interview with Team Rock, Turner reveals the album was named after a phrase said by close friend Lex – “eating’s cheating and sleep is for the week.” Lex is subject to the song Long Live The Queen featured on Turner’s 2008 release, and thus this alone adds sentimental and nostalgic value to the album celebrating its 10th birthday.
Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls performanced Sleep is for the Week live at Lost Evenings on the 13th of May 2017.
Wearing the same checked shirts from back in the day (no pun intended), Turner opens up “Back then, I wasn’t sure anyone was going to give a fuck.” But 10 years down the line, Turner and co. take to the stage for the second night of Lost Evenings – a four day event essentially celebrating all things Turner.
To the fans, Sleep is for the Week is a representation of Turner at his most naive in life.
The album speaks of Turner’s insecurity in love, with songs such as Romantic Fatigue, A Decent Cup of Tea – that expresses the struggle of letting someone know of your true feelings. And Worse Things Happen at Sea which presents some of Turner’s best work, with deep and dark content being presented via acoustic guitar and lyrics full of detest. Finally, The Ladies of London Town deals with a different aspect: ‘Who the hell do they go home with at the end of the night? …They never go home with me.’ – Turner states that this is how he used to view women of Camden town back when he was uninformed. At Lost Evenings, Turner dedicates the song to his longterm girlfriend.
The album also contains moments of self-evaluation, highlighted mostly within The Real Damage:
‘I started the night with all my friends and I ended up alone. Oh yes, I started out so happy now I’m hungover and down. It was about then that I realised I was halfway through the best years of my life.’
Turner’s self-criticism also appears within Wisdom Teeth, Must Try Harder, and the album’s single, Vital Signs. My Kingdom for a Horse – a song in which Turner admitted to have forgotten, yet vows to play more often from now on – alike follows the same theme.
Politics is a hot topic in Once We Were Anarchists, and this theme is carried through the night as Turner re-premiers a song he has not played live since 2008. Thatcher Fucked The Kids – featured on Love Ire & Song – made a return to the set-list, much to the wonderment of fans who believed they’d never hear it live again.

Family issues are exposed in Father’s Day, and this strikes up a powerful and personal connection with many. This is reflected as Turner and The Sleeping Souls perform the song during the encore.
Despite the darkness of the some of the stories that inspired Sleep is for the Week’s content, the night presents a great sense of nostalgia. And, Turner attempts to present a good night for all – as always.
Lightheaded humour takes to the stage as an inflatable parrot, gold coins, and sword are introduced to accompany Nasir’s newly earnt eye patch, following an accident that occurred the night before at Show 2056.
On the special addition of Sleep is for the Week released to commemorate its 10th anniversary, Turner highlights that The Ballad of Me and My Friends represents his rebellion against what society deems as successful. Turner’s claim that he could have been a Lawyer is met to an array of boos; and as the album draws to an end, it’s clear that Turner is exactly where he’s supposed to be. And doing exactly what he’s supposed to do.
