Trump’s Tunes – Green Day release video for ‘Troubled Times’

You know how they say every cloud has its silver lining? Trump’s upcoming presidency has inspired Green Day to fireback with a new politically-fuelled powerhouse.

The video for ‘Troubled Times’ was released on the 16th of January, and currently sits within the top ten trending videos on YouTube.

The lyric video depicts the progression of love and acceptance struggling alongside the distruption that hate brings. It features iconic figures within history, some heroic, and others notorious.

Trump is illustrated as a trash-talking monster of war.

This adds dark humour to an otherwise incredibly clever and moving video. Alongside this, hand placards that read “Make America Hate Again” are featured – this is a play on words that is just as powerful as the rest of the video.

A element of the video that stood out to me was the powerful imagery used to suggest that votes are literally throwing away the hard work of others.

This shot develops to show the world ending in destruction.

Alongside this, an army of robotic arms can be seen matching along with their voting cards in hand. These ballots then turn into razor blades – suggesting self-harm. As well as leading to the death of anarchy doves, which can be seen as symbolising peace found through rebellion.

Lyrically, the song reminds me of The Black Eyed Peas’ 2013 release of ‘Where is the Love?’ They both highlight the devastation in the world around us, and they inflict a reaction from those who engage with it.
It will be interesting to see where Trump’s presidentcy takes the USA, and the rest of the world. Let’s just hope it doesn’t result in the end of it.
